Commercial / Mellow Johnny's

Mellow Johnny’s is the remodel of an existing warehouse building in downtown Austin into Lance Armstrong’s local bike shop, commuter hub and coffee shop. The project uncovered the original industrial building by exposing the existing brick, steel, wood and concrete framework which provides a rich textural backdrop to the precise, high tech appearance of the racing bicycles. While the main floor is retail and a coffee shop, downstairs houses a cycling training clinic, workout room, offices for a cycling team, bike repair, as well as showers and storage for commuting cyclists. Hoping to be a new participant in the growing pedestrian oriented neighborhood surrounding the shop, the façade is opened up with large windows and a new patio. This project was a 2008 Preservation Merit Award recipient from the Heritage Society of Austin.
